Strings
Students have the opportunity to learn violin, viola, cello, or bass, and play in an ensemble. MYCincinnati currently has three levels of string orchestra, for a combined total of 115 students. Most students studying a stringed instrument are engaged in 2 hours of MYCincinnati programming daily, for a total of 10 hours per week. Activities include orchestra rehearsals, sectionals, private lessons, chamber music, and teaching/mentoring. Our string musicians have collaborated and performed with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, pianist Awadagin Pratt, Swedish songwriter Jens Lekman, hip hop performance artist Napoleon Maddox, Elementz Urban Arts, MUSE Women’s Choir, and more.
Woodwinds
Our winds program offers students the opportunity to study flute, clarinet, bass clarinet, basoon, or oboe, and play in an ensemble. Currently, MYCincinnati has 15 students enrolled in the winds program, with two levels of ensemble. Activities include ensemble rehearsals, sectionals, private lessons, and chamber music. Our winds students have collaborated and performed with clarinetist Anthony McGill, the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, Wayside Winds, and more.
Percussion
Students have the opportunity to learn a wide array of percussion instruments, including marimba, glockenspiel, snare drum, cymbals, drum kit, and more. There are 10 students enrolled in the percussion ensemble
Price Hillharmonic
In 2015, Price Hill Will received a grant from the Kresge Foundation through LISC Greater Cincinnati to incorporate Creative Placemaking into our work. This new initiative was led by Laura Jekel, MYCincinnati Founder and former Price Hill Will staff member. One activity Laura undertook was playing music in Kroger every week to grow neighbor’s interest in MYCincinnati. As a result, many residents expressed the desire to learn an instrument. The following year, Laura founded the Price Hillharmonic with an initial group of 30 adults.
The Price Hillharmonic is a community orchestra open to neighborhood adults with or without any prior musical experience. Participants practice rehearse once a week and most of the adults who join are learning an instrument from scratch. Since 2016, the Price Hillharmonic has been an amazing way for people in the neighborhood to learn music and build a stronger intergenerational community – some members are relatives of students in our youth program.
